Oaxaca (A Guide Book by Bruce Whipperman, Moon Handbooks) review
When I decided to travel to Mexico in the winter of 2006, I looked at several guide books for Mexico, before deciding on Oaxaca. Considering the type of travel I like to do (discover as much for myself as I can based on minimal information), I felt there where two travel guide book publishers to consider: Lonely Planet and Moon Handbooks. Lonely Planet has great information and great maps. I find that they make their guide books too thick with their opinions - which quite honestly I could do without. Some people like that and that’s fine. I’ve used their guide books in the past and probably will in the future.
Moon Handbooks offers an alternative choice. They tend to include locations that Lonely Planet leaves out, and are lighter on opinion. Their maps are not nearly as good, and it is hard to navigate around their books.
What really sold me on Moon Handbooks for this trip was the choice of more detailed guide books for regions within Mexico. Since I did not plan to travel the whole country, I elected to buy a guide book for just the state of Oaxaca. This provided me with much more detail about the region I was travelling in, and a smaller physical book also. Thus I was able to discover places that are not even mentioned in Lonely Planet.
I recommend the Oaxaca travel guide book for those who what to explore the smaller and less travelled parts of the state, for those who want less book to lug around, and for those who simply want an alternative guide from what everyone else is following.
